I’m Not a Customer

Harry Shannon

Here’s my letter that appeared in the Hamilton Spectator recently. It’s self-explanatory – no background info needed.

Not a Customer

I called Premier Doug Ford’s office to give my opinion on some of his policies. Before I spoke to a human, a recorded message told me I would be forwarded to a ‘Customer Service Representative.’

Really? When you participate in a democracy, you are not a ‘customer.’ You’re a citizen, a resident, an elector. I said this to the CSR, who told me others have made the same point, but nothing has changed.

It’s appalling that Ford sees us as customers. But he surely knows that when customers are unhappy, you need to change your product. After all, the customer is always right.
