Donald Trump has caused a huge kerfuffle by wondering if Canada might become the 51st US state. Canadians have rushed to proclaim Canada’s sovereignty and declare that we will never join the US.
There’s a simple reason why it won’t happen and it’s nothing to do with whether Canadians want it or not. Here’s the letter I wrote in the Hamilton Spectator a little while ago with my argument:
Re: Dismiss Trump’s taunts, expert says after online posts about Canada, Dec. 26.
I agree that we should stop taking seriously Donald Trump’s musings about Canada as the 51st state.
Opinion polls show Canada would be one of the staunchest Democrat states, if not the staunchest. An Environics poll earlier this year showed Canadians supported Joe Biden over Trump by 60% to 21%.
If Canada became a state, our population (similar to California’s) would guarantee the Democrats a massive block of Electoral College votes. The Republicans will not let it happen.
